[ The expression on Angeal's face was absolutely priceless. The Turks really do have this uncanny way of arriving just in the nick of time. Hell, their penchant for punctuality is borderline uncanny but Angeal can't help but appreciate it. Some of the Seconds could learn a thing or two in that regard, namely his pup.
Despite feeling quite confident in his choice of attire, Angeal can't help but feel slightly underdressed. What can he say? He's still a country boy who likes to keep it simple. Rude, however, is a triple fucking threat right now despite the shades. Rude is so cool. Ridiculously, so. The general census among the Firsts is that the Turks are an anomaly worthy of both praise and scorn thanks to their red-headed mascot, Reno, and some of their less than honorable deeds. While he's a little uncertain how this date will go, Angeal is at least glad there's some interest there between them. ]
Oh, you noticed.
[ He responds with a slight smirk. ]
That means you must've been keeping tabs on me before.
[ That's funny. He doesn't remember seeing Rude around headquarters too often. Geez! The Turks are really something else. Should he flattered or turned off? He's not even sure anymore but what catches his attention is Rude's next question. ]
Midgar isn't that bad. Besides, I still got my fists.
[ He states with a measure of confidence that is more than just arrogance on his part. Even though Angeal is known for carrying that enormous Buster Sword around, he rarely ever uses it. Why? Rust. So he says but that's not entirely the truth. Angeal is a lethal combatant with or without his sword. Who else can knock a mako-infused monster out cold with their bare fists? Even so, maybe Angeal should've brought something with him.
He lets out a light chuckle as he falls into step with Rude. ]
Though, we can't have Genesis spouting poetry at you all day. So, I'll play it safe.
[Rude has a brief moment to wonder why he never bothered sparring with the other man. After all, Angeal was probably one of the best hand-to-hand people in the company, and one of the few that could keep up with Rude. How interesting.
Rude walks them over to the restaurant otherwise silent, and then holds the door open once they get to it.]
Surprised you don't go out for food more often. That Genesis doesn't haul you off for dinner and a show.
[ He just might end up purchasing a Chain Bangle later. He has plenty of them back at his apartment but he might as well be safe than sorry. Midgar is a rough city and despite being up here on the plates, it's still pretty rough. Even so, Angeal is less concerned about all that as he is about Rude.
It doesn't come to his surprise that he knows very little about him. The Turk goes out of his way to keep a low profile. He seldom speaks unless spoken to and the two of them never really spoke much until now. So Angeal finds himself wondering just how will this dinner will go. While he's quite eager to learn more about his date, he realizes that they hail from two different worlds.
It's just that they serve the same master. ]
Genesis tries his best but I don't like theatre.
[ He says with an appreciative smirk when Rude opens the door. Angeal always thought Rude was the classier of the duo considering his near impeccable manners. Unlike his partner Reno, it seems Rude has a penchant for fine dining. That's something the Turk shares with Genesis surprisingly enough. ]
[What about him, huh? There are a lot of reasons a Turk doesn't have time for shows or movies. One never knows when they will be called in, so Rude had mostly chosen to take up hobbies that were easily put aside. Movies he could watch at home and pause. Books that could be put away. He hasn't even bothered to learn to cook, ovens and stoves could burn things down, or he could be sent along for days.
Fine dining was the best option he had. Sure, sometimes he hit up food stalls or hole in the wall joints. But when he wanted Costan, it was always caliber. If it wasn't going to be his Madre's cooking, it had to be good.]
Don't do plays. Too many people. Can't see backstage. Too many points of entrance. Would have to sit at the end of a row, which sacrifices visibility.
[Yes, there was definitely inherent paranoia. Which only is underlined here. The hostess clearly recognizes Rude, and doesn't even ask his name. Instead she takes him to an already set up table, scooping up menus as she goes. Most of the time the women would do the whole specials of the day spiel. She knows it isn't appreciated from this man.
So they are guided to a table near the back, close to the doors to the kitchen without being right there. Sight lines to the doors and the bathroom area. Not too close to the windows. Rude, of course, takes the seat with the back to the wall and all those perfect sight lines. Even the candles at the table, normally actual candles, have been replaced with electronic ones, burning with that green mako-energy light.
Paranoia is healthy sometimes. Moreso in his line of work.]
[ That inherent paranoia is something that Angeal can sympathize with to some degree. However, it certainly cements the notion that they have very different lives. Angeal doesn't have to worry too much about possibly getting ambushed or killed unless we're talking about insurgence members or anti-Shinra protestors. He can easily venture around town without a single worry but for Rude, that's the opposite.
The Turks are well hated and feared at the same time. They're operatives, after all. Cold stone killers who act on the becking call of President Shinra himself. They do a lot of things that the top-brass don't want the public to know about and even have a higher security clearance than the military. With all this in mind, everything Rude says makes sense. Why would a Turk willingly put himself in danger by going to enjoy a Broadway play? ]
Good point.
[ He comments after a moment of thought. ]
I might use that as my excuse the next time Genesis asks me out.
[ Which is bound to happen since Genesis can't take no for an answer. It's well known that Angeal lacks his passion in the arts but that hasn't stopped Genesis yet from dragging him to a play or two. That's just how things are between them.
The table the waitress offers them isn't bad the least. It's far enough away from the other patrons to give them a sense of privacy without seeming completely closed off. He figured that Rude would prefer this spot since it's tucked away and out of view. After all, he has a healthy sense of paranoia thanks to his job. However, this makes Angeal wonder why Rude is willing to risk it all just to have a dinner date with him. It's evident that Rude frequents this restaurant sometimes judging from the look of familiarity in the staff's gaze. Still, Angeal can't help but feel at least a little guilty for putting the Turk at needless peril. ]
Is that why you prefer books over the grand stage?
[ He asks as he glances over the menu briefly. The prices are what he would expect of a classy joint like this but Angeal can't help feel the need to be somewhat frugal. After all, Rude is paying. ]
[Rude doesn't even bother to look at his menu. He knows what he wants. It is not something he normally gets, but the gesture matters, because it is one of the most expensive things on the menu. But he'll wait until the waitress comes over, and he can order a bottle of expensive wine. Just to underline the point that for dinner, money will be no issue. Rude's paid almost as well as an executive. Shinra has to bribe people to do this job in some serious way.]
You're welcome to it. I attempt to use it on Reno when he wants to go places. Don't bother anymore, because he knows me too well.
[He leans back in his seat, just a little bit.]
Books are something I can put down. It is like being the on call First. Life can change in a moment. I prefer not to get involved in things I cannot immediately abandon.
But I hope you're not the type to abandon everything outside of work.
[ There's a hint of a smirk upon Angeal as he speaks, one that briefly hints to the underlining message there. While he finds it rather admirable that Rude takes his work that seriously, that notion of just adnadoning things makes him feel a bit cautious. While he's virtually in the same position considering his rank in SOLDIER, Angeal isn't the type to abandon his relationships. His friendship with Genesis and Sephiroth is proof of that. ]
So what will you be getting?
[ He asks curiously after glancing over the menu again. ]
I'm in the mood for shrimp scampi with linguini. I haven't had that dish in a while.
[ He could probably make it back at home but getting quality seafood can be a bit pricy sometimes. Unlike Rude, he doesn't eat out every night. This is something of a rare occasion for him since he tends to find joy in cooking. It's a rather domestic hobby to have but Angeal loves it. ]
[Rude opens his own menu and turns it to show Angeal. He taps a meal that involves a full cooked fish, first marinaded in serious spices, then grilled slowly. The price for it is obscene.]
Also getting a salad. Maybe a dessert.
[The raised eyebrow he gives with that suggests that dessert will entirely depend on how dinner plays out.]
I ordered ahead. Takes a few hours to cook it. You can try it too.
[It's a lot of food after all. And when the waitress shows up he's quick to order his wine, white of course and a good quality, as well as water. It's only after Angeal has a chance to place a drink order, the waitress wanting to give them more time for other parts of the order, that Rude turns his attention to the other question. Wanted to make sure he had privacy for it.
EVen if it hadn't been phrased as a question.]
I abandon only the thing I am working on at the moment, and only if that is what is required of me. I'm still in touch with family back home. I see no point in isolation.
[The soldier lets out a low whistle once he sees the price of that dish on the menu. Angeal figured that Rude appreciates the finer things in life but that's ridiculous! Then again, he's a Turk and they get paid very, very well. Angeal grins up a little at the possibility of dessert. It seems like Rude is hellbent on wining and dining him tonight. Angeal can't help but grin.]
I wouldn't mind dessert at all.
[But what to order? This restaurant has a rather impressive list of savory delights, each of which sounds more appetizing than the last. He'll be relying on Rude's expertise here, especially since the Turk is a well-known patron. A little overwhelmed by all the selections, Angeal peeks over at Rude when he offers to share the main course with him. The dish he ordered is the second most expensive dish here. Angeal would be a fool not to take him up on his offer.]
If you don't mind, I think I will.
[He says with a look of gratitude before glancing down the menu again. This isn't his first rodeo within such a fancy establishment but it's been a while. The last time he visited a restaurant of this caliber was back in Junon for the military showcase. All of Shinra's top-brass was there including President Shinra himself and his son, Rufus. It was a black-tie event, of course. A little too stuffy for Angeal's liking but he managed well enough. This date is a bit more low-key than that but it has the same vibe almost.
When the waitress appears, he orders himself a bottle of scotch to go with the wine before deicing to order a salad as well. Despite knowing his date can more than cover the bill, he's still trying his best to be frugal. That's just how he is after all.]
Seems that we share that in common. Since my father passed, I do my best to keep in contact with my mother.
[Angeal doesn't doubt at the Turks already have a file on him somewhere in headquarters but he doesn't want to think about that.]
Tell me about yourself. Where are you from or is that classified information?
[The man actually had no intention on specifically wining and dining. It was more that he wanted the man to be comfortable. The fact of the matter was that he was mostly just intrigued by the fact that Angeal had even asked him.
And honestly, he wanted to see what was going on here, where it might go.
That being said, being a Turk, he wasn't even about to admit to having living family. Still, where he's from isn't too bad. Not when this is a First Class. Besides, it wasn't like the guy knew his name.]
[Angeal can't help but smirk a little when Rude answers the question with the same evasiveness he would expect of a Turk. While he thinks the man is telling the truth, it's hard to tell. He figured that Rude wouldn't be willing to disclose anything personal about himself but learning where he's from is a small accomplishment since Rude seems more tight-lipped than his partner.]
Coast of the Sun, really? Here I thought you were from Gongaga.
[He says jokingly knowing that the latter location happens to be the hometown of his pupil, Zack. He figured that Rude hailed from either Costa del Sol or Junon. The Turk doesn't strike him as the small-town sort of person. As for himself, Angeal definitely is a backwater country boy.]
Is that why you're such an expert on seafood?
[He teases once the waitress returns with their orders in tow. The scotch he ordered is shockingly smooth like bourbon with a bit of a bite at the end. It's refreshing, to say the least. Angeal doesn't drink much but when he does, he typically sticks with whiskey or scotch.]
[And come on, can you declare that place as anything else? Costa, though, is one of the larger cities in that region, with plenty of small, nothing villages scattered around. Rude, though, used to care about the city. That was a while ago.]
Nothing in Gongaga. There are things in Costa. And yes. It would be.
[Still evasive, but there you have it. Rude takes his wine and takes a light sip of it. Yes, he approves of the year.]
A lot of Costan food is sea food. Catch of the day. Usually grilled.
Don't let Zack hear that. He's quite defensive about his hometown.
[Despite his pup's loyalty to his quiet hometown, Angeal has to admit that Gongaga isn't known for much other than weeds and trees. At least with Banora, they have something going for it in the terms of agriculture but poor Gongaga was just some little village in the middle of nowhere. It's not a worldly renowned vacation resort much like the beautiful Costa del Sol.]
How does Midgar's vast culinary scene compare with that of Costa del Sol's? I would assume that Midgar's take on some of the classics is at least passable.
[ The cuisine back home in Banora is a bit lacking despite their widely converted dumbapples being a staple across the world ].
There's nothing there. Banora at least has apples.
[And frankly, Rude was a fan of the juice. He kept a supply of Banora White for his morning smoothies. So it had something going for it.
Pretty good that Angeal didn't praise Costa as beautiful, though. Rude didn't want to laugh.]
Food here isn't very good. Except pizza. Produce isn't fresh or locally sourced. The fish tastes oily at best unless you're some place like here. The food is greasy.
[There is a reason that he chooses to frequent high end restaurants. Better ingredients, fresher food. It TASTES better, even when the cuisines aren't properly seasoned. Clearly the Turk did not have a very good opinion of Midgar's food. In Costa he'd even had a chance to learn some other kinds of cuisine. Mideelese curries and Wutaian sushi. There was even a small hole in the wall place that did Nibelheim stews and meat pies and it had been really good.
Midgar drew people from all around the world, but that didnt' mean the food was good.]
I feel the same about the food here. That's why I don't normally order out.
[That and the fact Angeal is still a cheapskate despite enjoying all the luxuries and benefits of being a SOLIDER. Unlike Rude who seems to enjoy fancy dinners and expensive wines, Angeal enjoys the simpler things in life. Besides, cooking is something of a passion of his. Even so, not too many people know that this big burly soldier is so domesticated.]
Still, I find Midgar to be rather interesting because of all the different cultures represented here. If you ignore the grease and grime, this city isn't so bad.
[He admits with a hint of fondness in his tone as he glances over at the other patrons briefly. Even now, his statement holds. Midgar is a fascinating place. Terrifying and fascinating all in the same breath. Sometimes Angeal wonders if he likes this city more than home. While he sometimes misses the tranquility of Banora, he sometimes prefers the hustle and bustle of Midgar more.]
[Well, Angeal was lucky to be able to cook. Rude could mostly only make things that were frozen and pre-made. Time. Work. Life. It consumed much of his freedom.]<./small>
Midgar has downsides too. Like fanclubs.
[So far Rude hadn't seen a sign of someone trying to take a picture of them. That would be annoying.
He's thinking about that as Angeal asks, and he can't help the slight smirk.]
[ Poor Angeal nearly choked on his water when Rude mentions the fanclubs. If there's one thing he hates about his life currently, it's the fanclubs., Shinra thought it was a good idea to promote fanclubs for their elites in hopes of gaining more favor with the public with their militaristic goals. The higher-ups never imagined that these fanclubs would take off so well among both the public and the military. While Sephiroth is certainly more popular than him, Angeal has noticed a strange uptick of interest in him ever since he took a protege. Now he rivals the General for likes on social media and honestly, Angeal hates it. ]
It's not easy to be popular.
[ He peeks over his shoulder briefly in a fit of paranoia before letting out a tense sigh. The last thing he wants is a camera in his face right now. Privacy is something he truly values but seldom gets.]
Hm? Why ask?
[ A smirk curls onto his lips as he regards Rude. ]
Curiosity. I always wanted to ask you out but never had the chance.
[If there were any clubs here, Rude would deal with them. It wasn't a good Turk thing to be taken like this. Still, he watches Angeal very closely. Very carefully. Because he doesn't understand. Curiosity was what brought him here. But the other thing...]
Always wanted?
[He sips at his wine, leaving the question as the main point. Strange how much he wants the answer.]
[ Angeal falls silent for a moment as he pours himself another round of scotch. He gives Rude a knowing smirk as he thinks of the best way to explain himself. It's a little difficult since he's encroaching upon unfamiliar territory but eventually, he finds the right words. ]
Maybe they don't try because they don't see an opportunity.
[ He answers honestly with a genuine smile. ]
For the longest time, I wasn't even sure you be interested so I kept my distance. Though, who would've guessed all it would take is for Zack to start experimenting with prairie dogs to get us to talk.
[They don't try because Reno is possessive and scares people off. Harder for a Turk to scare off one of the most dangerous men in the world. But he chuckles, because yes, that is a very good point. He enjoys more of the drink and then, after a moment, takes his sunglasses off.
IT's not something he does often. His eyes are too expressive.]
Perhaps it would be best to not question this then. I admit, I was not aware that men were....
[Angeal finishes with an amused grin. It goes without saying that Rude is a very attractive man. He's classically handsome in every sense of the word, the iconic "tall, dark, and handsome" archetype but his affiliation with the Turks almost makes him too dangerous to pursue. Add that in with Reno's penchant for violence and it's a recipe for disaster. Nevertheless, Angeal doesn't seem too perturbed at the thought of getting on Reno's bad side.
If anything, he respects the redhead's protectiveness over his partner. It certainly reminds him of his protectiveness over Zack somewhat. In a sense, Reno did take Rude under his wing when he joined the Turks. The hotblooded Turk is about two years his senior work-wise despite being the younger of the duo. That much is known to Angeal since he did a little digging around in the past about them.]
Or did you mean "intimidated"? Without the sunglasses, you look like a completely different person.
[ Rude does have beautiful eyes. They're shockingly expressive, dark, and soulful. Angeal finds himself smiling unconsciously as he observes Rude. It's hard to not be somewhat mesmerized by him. ]
[Rude holds no illusions about himself. He is fit. He is dangerous. He is well dressed. For some people that is all that is needed. Not that Rude believes himself handsome. But he knows sometimes it's the risk that makes a thing appealing. Unless it's Soldier. They had enough risk already.
But when he is complimented, he looks away a little. The shades were great at hiding those shy edges that somehow survived. And the gentleness of his gaze. He didn't have the unaffected look Tseng perfected, or the 'going to eat you' eyes that Reno was good at. He was soft, always.]
bout it[ Angeal arches his brow once Rude clarifies. It shouldn't come as any surprise that Angeal treads very carefully regarding the topic at hand. After all, it would be positively disastrous for Shinra's PR if one of their top elites came out of the metaphorical closet. Or would it? Angeal heard of some of the fiction out there about him and the others thanks to Genesis. To say the least, he's not happy about that. ]
Maybe I'm a little too secretive about it.
[ He admits with a somewhat uneasy chuckle. ]
But then again, if I could fool a Turk, then that's a compliment.
[ He gives Rude a sympathetic glance once he notices that bashful expression. While he didn't expect him to be shy, it now makes sense as to why Rude often wears his shades. He's too soft, probably the type to wear his heart on his sleeves. ]
Is it the same reason why Reno is so protective of you?
[ Angeal almost forgot all about the food until it arrived. He's already halfway through his bottle of scotch and he isn't even tipsy yet. If anything, Angeal might be a bit more talkative than usual but he's definitely not drunk. ]
Oh, that's a relief!
[ He exclaims with a breath of relief as he adds a bit of dressing to the salad. Just a touch of balsamic if anything. Angeal typically stays away from the creamier variety because of his strict diet.]
And here I thought you guys were snooping into our personal belongings and such.

Tell me about yourself. Where are you from or is that classified information?

Date: 2020-05-10 06:15 am (UTC)And honestly, he wanted to see what was going on here, where it might go.
That being said, being a Turk, he wasn't even about to admit to having living family. Still, where he's from isn't too bad. Not when this is a First Class. Besides, it wasn't like the guy knew his name.]
Costa Del Sol. Haven't been in years.

Date: 2020-05-10 05:33 pm (UTC)Coast of the Sun, really?

Date: 2020-05-10 07:21 pm (UTC)[And come on, can you declare that place as anything else? Costa, though, is one of the larger cities in that region, with plenty of small, nothing villages scattered around. Rude, though, used to care about the city. That was a while ago.]
Nothing in Gongaga. There are things in Costa. And yes. It would be.
[Still evasive, but there you have it. Rude takes his wine and takes a light sip of it. Yes, he approves of the year.]
A lot of Costan food is sea food. Catch of the day. Usually grilled.

Date: 2020-05-10 09:06 pm (UTC)[Despite his pup's loyalty to his quiet hometown, Angeal has to admit that Gongaga isn't known for much other than weeds and trees.

Date: 2020-05-10 10:06 pm (UTC)[And frankly, Rude was a fan of the juice.

Date: 2020-05-11 04:13 am (UTC)[That and the fact Angeal is still a cheapskate despite enjoying all the luxuries and benefits of being a SOLIDER.
So, tell me...what made you accept my invitation?
[Angeal asks once he glances at Rude again.]
Curiosity?

Date: 2020-05-11 04:27 am (UTC)Midgar has downsides too. Like fanclubs.
[So far Rude hadn't seen a sign of someone trying to take a picture of them. That would be annoying.
He's thinking about that as Angeal asks, and he can't help the slight smirk.]
Had to eat dinner anyway. And confusion. Why ask?

Date: 2020-05-11 01:34 pm (UTC)It's not easy to be popular.

Date: 2020-05-11 06:01 pm (UTC)Always wanted?
[He sips at his wine, leaving the question as the main point. Strange how much he wants the answer.]
Few people ever try.

Date: 2020-05-11 07:34 pm (UTC)Maybe they don't try because they don't see an opportunity.
[ He answers honestly with a genuine smile. ]
For the longest time, I wasn't even sure you be interested so I kept my distance. Though, who would've guessed all it would take is for Zack to start experimenting with prairie dogs to get us to talk.

Date: 2020-05-11 07:40 pm (UTC)IT's not something he does often. His eyes are too expressive.]
Perhaps it would be best to not question this then. I admit, I was not aware that men were....
[He gestures, unable to complete the sentence.]

Date: 2020-05-11 09:47 pm (UTC)[Angeal finishes with an amused grin.

Date: 2020-05-11 09:59 pm (UTC)[Rude holds no illusions about himself.
There's a reason I have them made.

Date: 2020-05-11 11:09 pm (UTC)Maybe I'm a little too secretive about it.

Date: 2020-05-11 11:24 pm (UTC)[He reaches for his shades. And doesn't. Just lets his hand go past for the wine and drinks a little more as their salads are delivered.]
My duty does not include the first classes. I don't monitor you, so didn't know.
[Chance were he could have learned it if he had wanted to.]

Date: 2020-05-11 11:48 pm (UTC)Oh, that's a relief!
[ He exclaims with a breath of relief as he adds a bit of dressing to the salad. Just a touch of balsamic if anything. Angeal typically stays away from the creamier variety because of his strict diet.]
And here I thought you guys were snooping into our personal belongings and such.
