BACKGROUND:

Rude is one of the senior members of the Investigation Sector of General Affairs Department of the Shinra Electric Company, a group known as Turks. This is the largest and more powerful company and effectively political organization on the planet. This group acts as a combination of the CIA, the FBI, the NSA, all of those letter organizations melded together into one highly undersized group. Sure, they only manage it for one country and all that country lays claims to, but there you have it. They're investigators, spies, assassins, and even recruiters in some instances. Basically if there is something Shinra needs done on the quiet, it's the Turks that they turn to so that it is done. Among them Rude is a long term member, and one of only three still standing in the organization before the game started.

Before this point, the Turks were a slightly more numerous group, headed by a man named Veld, with whom they attempted to stop a branch of the terrorist organization Avalanche that sought to topple Shinra. Unfortunately it turned out that Veld's long missing and thought dead daughter was a leader of this organization, and due to some ideological differences and the difficulty the man had going after his lost daughter, there was division in the group that left only Rude, Reno, and the former second of the group, Tseng, fled Shinra.

Because of this, Rude has been forced to take up more duties that would normally be spread over a far wider spread of Turks. One of these includes keeping watch over the last remaining Cetra in the world, a girl named Aerith who was born to a pure-blooded Cetra and a former Shinra Scientist. Since the company had chosen to let the girl remain with her adoptive mother, Elmyra, due to an assumption that Aerith could only perform the task Shinra required of her by voluntarily coming to Shinra, Rude frequently makes trips to the Sector Five Slums to watch over Aerith and speak with her mother, to the point where he's seen as a familiar face by the women. His purpose is entirely to serve as a protective figure, though over the years Aerith has clearly come to resent her Turk detail.

As part of this detail Rude gets tapped to check up on Aerith after his partner Reno lost track of her after an encounter with former-Soldier, Cloud Strife. When he didn't find Aerith at the Gainsborough home, he awaited the two, informing the Soldier that he should leave and Aerith that he was just trying to protect her. Ultimately this lead to a show down between Cloud and Rude, the man keeping up with the mako-enhanced swordsman with only his fists and martial arts prowess. The fight ultimately came to a stand still because of two factors: Rude was in a two on one fight and wasn't willing to hurt Aerith, and because as they came to a pause in the fight, Rude received a recall order. Another mission had come up.

A mission which started to fracture some of Rude's will: dropping the Sector Seven Plate. It was an act that was to be lamed on a branch of Avalanche that was more than just anti-Shinra, they were serious eco-terrorists. The assumption that Avalanche operated in Sector Seven and their 'successful' attacks on two different Mako reactors (with their destruction ultimately coming from Shinra in truth) was what 'justified' the attack. By bringing down the plate they could blame it on Avalanche, while taking out a particularly annoying branch of the organization. And kill over 40,000 people in the process. Rude was assigned to fly a helicopter carrying his partner to the top of the plate support structure, so that Reno could input the code to blow the support and other locks. Throughout the whole operation they had to maintain the fiction that they were protecting the pillar from Avalanche.

That didn't stop Rude and Reno from sharing a distaste for the mission.

In the end they were forced to face Cloud and Avalanche in a fight at the top of the pillar, with Reno priming the system before he was attacked, but not able to input the final command. Rude and his helicopter end up shot down and they lose a fight to Cloud, Tifa, and Barret, with Rude barely escaping alive with Reno after activating the detonation. The two return to Shinra HQ, where Reno is treated for injuries and they meet with their boss. Even Rude, frequently quiet, expressed his distaste for the mission to his superior, especially since it was him that pushed the final button, ultimately it was his hand that had been the final blow against tens of thousands of lives. The fact that a portion had escaped didn't matter. That their targets had survived and Tseng had used the chance to kidnap Aerith wasn't important. Rude now had guilt and doubt for President Shinra and his plans.

Good thing later that night he was summoned with Reno to pick up the Vice President, Rufus Shinra, from his imposed exile to Junon. Just in time for the President to die, Rufus to step up to lead the company, and the Turks to be empowered. Now all Rude can do is look to the future and the dual threats of Avalanche and Sephiroth and wonder just how much of a cost this job is going to demand now.

PERSONALITY:

At first glance Rude could be seen as a quiet, stoic, and duty driven company man, loyal to the end to the Shinra Electric Company. Truth of the matter is that Rude is far more complex. For one thing he is less quiet and more not always certain how to speak to others. When he can Rude prefers to let his partner Reno do the talking, especially with parties he's not familiar with and hasn't interacted with before. Part of this derives from the fact that the language most commonly spoken in Midgar is not his native tongue and sometimes he gets a bit lost trying to figure out the right words. Other times he proves how unprepared he is behind that stern and imposing figure with how he trips over his own tongue and stammers or fumbles for the right way to say something, to the point where he might be rendered silent as he tries to root out the right word or phrase or way to sound to get his point across.

Then that's that whole stoic thing. Given the fact that Rude tends to be a) silent, and b) standing near Reno, it's easy to think he doesn't emote much. The fact is that he's just rather good at hiding emotions, even wearing his shades to make his expression harder to read. While not as quick to anger or take offense as his partner, there are things that will offend the man, such as suggesting he's not doing his job properly, or suggesting he's an evil man. The fact is that he's not evil, and Rude knows it. He's just a man doing a job, and sometimes good people have to do bad things. Mostly, though, his emotions show up best in turmoil, such as concern when he nearly loses his partner to a serious beating by Avalanche, or in his guilt over what he and Reno had a hand in when it came to Sector Seven.

And speaking of Sector Seven, well, it's true to say that Rude isn't quite the same Company man today as he was, say, two days before the Sector Seven plate. Duty and experience kept him with Shinra, and his understanding that his job was far more than just the 'dirty work' some might see the Turks as. He works as a bodyguard, as counter-intel when people try to spy on Shinra, as recruitment for elite SOLDIER forces, and many other tasks. In the end he sees these all as tasks that are set to him by the company that has been his life for the past eight years, and he likes to make sure he "dots his 'i's and crosses his 't's." Which doesn't mean he follows orders blindly. Rude openly acknowledges when about to face down with Cloud that he's a good person that sometimes has to do bad things. Like hurt other people. Like kill. Like monitor a young woman with the knowledge that some day he might be ordered to kidnap her and bring her to Shinra's R&D Department, even if the man in charge doesn't have all of his marbles. At one point, he even actively questions the orders of his superior, but that's a story for another time.

What Rude isn't going to let people know very easily is that inside, under the tough physique and the silent stares, Rude's actually a big softy. Acting violently towards people he perceives as innocent is very unlikely for him. More than that, he actively prevents his partner from shooting at a woman using the mounted artillery of the helicopter Rude was piloting at the time thought that might also have to do with his crush on the woman. He even develops a seemingly friendly relationship with the mother of one of their observation targets, and you can bet this isn't a guy that is going to see a hungry dog without giving it a bit of his lunch. How Shinra ended up with such a big softy is a mystery. Of course no one brings out his protective and concerned nature as much as his partner. When you work with someone for so long, you can't help but get protective. Especially when they can be as reckless as Reno is. The only concern he has is that maybe some of Reno's recklessness is finally starting to rub off on him.

At the end of the day, though, Rude is a man with a job. Sure it's not the most tasteful job, but someone has to do it. And if it's him, at least he knows it will be done right, and probably with a minimum of unnecessary mess and suffering.

POWER:
Sunglasses Conjuring: If at any point Rude loses, misplaces, breaks, or has his sunglasses taken from him by another person, he can reach into a pocket and pull out an identical set. The pocket does not have to be his own or limited to clothing. The pocket of a book bag or satchel also counts. The glasses have no particular strength or durability, they're just designer, very expensive, and he literally has no end to them. Mostly useful for keeping his eyes covered and winning bets in bars. The original missing/stolen/broken pair that he is replacing will disappear the second no one is looking at them.

Fire Affinity: Rude has an affinity for fire that allows him to create and manipulate fire. Think pyrokinesis or firebending. This is most easily done by focusing while throwing a punch, launching the fire from his fist, but over time and with practice the power will become more refined and capable of minute things, like lighting a cigarette without burning eyebrows off. In addition to this, his skin is resistant to burns and a high tolerance for extreme heat. Directly touching fire will do nothing to his skin. His clothes and possessions are not afforded the same resistance.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[Enjoy your video of a man in a suit, the angle chosen for the video making sure that more light shines off of his sunglasses than anything else, making his eyes even harder to see.]

Looking for a local gym. Best one you know. Need somewhere to practice and train.

[Life was harder without the training facilities his division maintained.]

Also. Somewhere that serves Wutain food.

[Will that even make sense to anyone? He doesn't care. His questions have been delivered. The message will either be answered or not. So he just cuts the recording there and posts it online. This is really a weird communication method people have set up.]
